Quarantined in Cabo: Weeks 6-9 (4/13 - 5/10)
The quarantine continues, but so have our creative ideas to keep our sanity spending all of our time at home. We are both thankful we’re healthy and have our jobs, something many people in the world today are not as fortunate to have. But while the slow roll of businesses opening in the states has begun, Mexico continues to stay on lockdown, keeping the locals and the tourism industry at the forefront of concern.
CABO IN THE NEWS
Week 6 started with 112 cases of COVID-19, increasing 26% from week 5, making it the most cases per capita (100k) in BCS. By Week 9, there were 120 cases with a 2.3% lethality rate.
You can now be fined, or even face jail time, if you are out walking or driving with someone else. Seems a bit drastic, but given the limited hospitals and the desperation to return tourism back to normal, we understand the strong measures and are complying.
The exchange rate is fluctuating, but we’ve seen it hit $25 pesos to $1 USD… aka we’re firing up those Amazon Mexico Prime purchases while we can!
The governor announced that the shutdown will end on May 30th and hotels/timeshares will begin to open up as of June 1st… pending all is on the up-and-up. Update: By the time we published this, this date has already been pushed back and we’re on quarantine for awhile longer.
We’ve read tourists are booking trips in for the summer, but flights are still being cancelled due to logistics and prices have escalated.
FEELING HOT, HOT, HOT
The past few weeks have been a bit of a struggle, simply due to the increasing daily temperatures. Over the weekend, a record-breaking tropical depression formed off the southern coast of Baja (we’re already in a global pandemic, why not throw on a record-setting potential hurricane?). Thankfully the storm moved west and was not a threat, but it did leave Cabo in a heat wave.
We’ve been in the mid-90s all week, so cranking the AC to get through the work days has been a must. We’re definitely missing our mid-70 days and mid-60 nights right about now! We know, we know… you don’t feel bad for us… but maybe you do for Kennedy? Shout-out to Rob & Ellen for the ‘Chill Out’ bandana they brought down for Ken — she loves it (we think).
QUARANTINE CELEBRATIONS!
Kyle’s Nana, Karen, celebrated a big birthday on April 30th, turning 80. We had a fun time putting together a group video to send her birthday wishes from near and far. We all hopped on a Zoom call to watch the video together. Many of us were in tears as our memories over the years faded in and out on screen… it was a very special long-distance birthday.
Another celebration was in order, as Leigh had hit some milestones at work! She’s been very busy these past few months with the craziness of COVID-19, however the extra hours paid off as her team hit their annual sales goal for the year! This called for a Friday afternoon celebration with a rooftop pool session followed by take-out sushi and homemade craft cocktails.
While we were getting out food and drink on, our at-home workouts had taken a back seat this week due to the high temps. This weekend the heat wave continued, so again, we were very thankful for our splurge pool purchase. Poolside Aperol Spritz’s and BLTs were in store for our afternoon.
WE SOCIALIZED… AND ATE MORE.
Our next door neighbors, in from New York City, have been quarantining in Cabo. Daisy and Adam are our age, which is super refreshing to have near by, quarantine or no quarantine. After exchanging grocery items and running into each other on walks, we decided it was time to break out from the social distancing rules and enjoy a Sunday brunch together.
We brought over breakfast tacos and they made banana pancakes, sausage and amazing cafe lattes. We sat on their shaded patio and indulged in delicious eats, enjoyed great conversation, and together escaped for a few hours into a “normal” Sunday afternoon.
We forgot to all take a photo, but we promise they’re real, and we look forward to hanging out with them again soon!
CINCO DE QUARANTINE
We would not have believed you if you told us we’d be celebrating our first Cinco de Mayo in Mexico… inside making tacos at home. However in typical fashion, we whipped up a delicious medley of homemade fixins for carne asada tacos and Mexican street corn. How many tacos are too many tacos? #TheLimitDoesNotExist
32 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN
Another quarantine birthday was in order! Leigh celebrated her 32nd this week.
To keep with her birthday tradition, Kyle ordered-in pink donuts to kickoff the morning right (Local Donut downtown is so good!).
Great eats have been a theme while staying at home, so when it’s birthday time, we kick it up a notch… with steak rib-eyes and crab legs. #Quarantine15 #ThisIsTurningIntoAFoodBlog
KEN VS. THE CATS
So if you are wondering what Kennedy has been up to… she’s being go on many, many walks. At least it’s keeping us active, too! Like we recently mentioned, she has replaced her love of chasing squirrels to… chasing cats. The feline Ken has been harassing lately, “Smokey”, must have called in her squad for backup, as there was a pretty serious stand-off that went down… a solid five minutes of (what we considered) quality entertainment — something you don’t take for granted after two months of quarantine, people.
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
We rounded out another relaxing weekend with Mother’s Day — a few calls to our family to check in and send our long-distance love. To breakup our food photos, we’ll end this blog with a beautiful pic of our moms from our wedding at Acre Baja. Happy Mother’s Day!
