Quarantined in Cabo: Weeks 4 & 5 (3/30 - 4/12)

Mexico life isn’t treating us too badly amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re typically homebodies on the weekend and we’re also both used to working from home, so not too much has seemed to change.

Another two weeks of quarantine in the books means another two weeks of video hangouts with friends and family, busy work schedules and more changes in Cabo.

The two main things we’re missing: the beach and our gym. So close, yet so far away.

Cabo in the news

  • We started week 4 with 9 COVID-19 cases in Los Cabos, ending week 5 with Mexico declaring a National Health emergency. There are now 73 cases, but not much testing going on yet, so likely much higher than reported.

  • Only essential business is to continue, others required to close their doors. About 70% of restaurants are temporarily closed and others offering take-out or delivery only.

  • All tourists have been ordered to return home with only 6% of hotels now occupied. Hotels & timeshare closed temporarily starting 4/1.

  • A group of 70 spring breakers from Austin rented a private jet and vacationed in Cabo. ~40 tested positive after returning home.

  • The Oosterdam cruise ship came into the marina this week with 700 crew members on board (this is actually the ship Leigh’s mom was on back in November in Cabo!). It had a short stint here after a crew member became sick and the Cabo port authority had to send them on their way to avoid the risk of the hospitals being crippled from an entire ship outbreak.

  • The state of BCS tried to enforce a 30-day dry law which would stat on April 6th (leading to everyone running out to stock up over the weekend!) but it was reversed the very next day. PHEW.

Keepin’ Busy

To groom or not to groom

Leigh feels like she is officially turning into the quarantine meme posted last week: just a few fake nails and eyelashes left. Kyle’s grooming was also turning suspect. We decided it was time for a quarantine cut. Prosecco was needed beforehand to ease the stylist’s nerves. Surprisingly, even without any “how to cut your husband’s hair” YouTube tutorials, the end product came out looking pretty good!

At least we are all in the same boat and don’t have anyone to see or impress (and we’re saving money?!).

We’ve also been trying to keep up with at-home workouts, staying motivated with fitness apps, two yoga mats and one hand weight (due to a language barrier issue on Amazon Prime Mexico). Kennedy’s vibes in this photo are actually how we’re feeling about home workouts so far.

Exploring the hood

The three of us have seen about every nook and cranny in our beautiful neighborhood over the last few weeks. Kennedy has taken up trying to chase the neighbors cats as a replacement for the lack of squirrels. We’re thankful for the the green grassy area to let her off the leash to run and the pretty sunsets we get to take in during our evening walks.

Friday Night Dance Party

Poolside-Lineup.png

Hanging with Friends

Friday night everyone dialed in and we live-streamed Poolside for a virtual “concert”. Cocktails, friends and music… in sweatpants. Why not?

operation upgrades

Since we have no idea how long we’ll be riding out this quarantine, we decided it was time to spice up our currently bare, empty rooftop patio. Insert: Kyle solo mission to Home Depot (also, homemade DIY masks are in full effect now, doing our best to stay safe).

Kyle ventured out on his own, which was dangerous considering he is like a kid in a grocery store check out line when left alone. There was no telling what impulse purchases he would make without Leigh to convince him otherwise, but that was exactly what this mission needed. Hours later, Kyle popped the trunk for a big shopping reveal: 2 new large palm plants and pots, 4 tiki torches with citronella oil, a 4-chair, table and umbrella patio set, and… grand finale… an inflatable pool. Mission… accomplished!

Now just need to order the right size pool floats on Amazon…

A SUNDAY WELL SPENT

We picked up some delicious BBQ ribs and sausages from a local private chef who smoked them in a custom made pit in his backyard. Absolutely delicious and very worth the drive to San Jose to get out of the house. We came back and enjoyed dinner on the roof, followed by a Zoom call with the Turner/Ismert/Daly clan. We sure enjoyed seeing everyone’s faces, catching up and laughing together.

Kicking off Monday Fresh

Another delivery of organic, fresh produce arrived to start our week off. This has turned out to be a highlight, as each box has so many interesting fruits & vegetables in it that we normally would never buy. This week we had Jicama, purple-veined potatoes, romanesco broccoli, tiny eggplants, fresh rosemary, fennel, leeks & a few other things we had to Google search. Such a steal for ~$20!

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday…

Does anyone know what happened these days? It’s all becoming a blur. We did order from our favorite local sushi spot and catch a few pretty epic sunsets somewhere in the mix.

Friday: Team Trivia Happy Hour

Who would have thought Friday evenings would now consist of playing virtual trivia? Not us, but also chalk it up in the ‘quarantine win’ column because it was super fun and another chance to see our friends faces which we don’t do enough normally. We had wine, pepperoni pizza and came in 2nd place. Not too shabby.

Saturday: Rooftop Shrimp Boil

To try and keep our occasional Saturday tradition alive, we caught wind that Sancho’s on the marina was doing their Shrimp Boil and we decided to capitalize. We told our neighbors about it and they were in, too, so we scheduled two orders for pick-up and had a ‘social distancing’ rooftop happy hour with them.

Sunday: EASTER ON LOCKDOWN

Somehow it’s Easter and it sure doesn’t feel like it. We kicked it off with a delicious brunch in the sun. Leigh made a combo of croissants with ham, egg & cheddar and berries & goat cheese (for something sweet!).

A great way to wrap up the weekend. That’s all for now, folks. We’ll leave you with a bit more Kennedy and our favorite new memes that have popped up the last two weeks.
