Road Trip Day 2: Moab → Grand Canyon & "Glamping" Under the Stars

Day 2.png

After our first successful night on the road and a hearty continental breakfast, we packed up and departed Moab at 8am. A quick stop at the local dog park for Ken to burn some energy and we were “on the road again”.

Leigh drove through the deserts of Arizona (only 3 out of 42 hours on the road, not bad right?!). We realized Kyle was not a great passenger either at this point, as our little succulent we were using as dashboard ambiance took a major tumble when left unattended. Poor driving or poor supervision? You be the judge.

We were so glad we made the time to stop and see the Grand Canyon. The views for the entire drive were jaw-dropping and breathtaking! Unbelievable feeling to think, fathom and understand the magnitude of the force of nature that passed through to create this magnificent wonder of the world.

Gateway to the Grand Canyon

Williams, Arizona, located at 6,770ft in the heart of the Kaibab National Forest. Founded in 1881, Williams was named for the famous trapper, scout and mountain man, "Old Bill Williams."

Cruising around the Grand Canyon

We took the Desert View Drive 25 mile scenic route through the South Rim, making stops to soak up the breath-taking views:

  • Desert Watchtower at Navajo Point

  • Moran Point

  • Grandview Point

  • Yaki Point

After a few photo great photo opps, we headed out the South entrance towards Tusayan to head for our last stop and stay for the evening. We wanted to make sure to get settled in before sunset.

Glamping at Under Canvas

We had read a lot about Under Canvas and had seen other friends stay at similar places. The glamping experience did not disappoint and was a nice change of scenery after your standard hotels. They upgraded our tent to a ‘suite’ since we were celebrating our wedding anniversary on the road, which was a great way to start off our evening. It was so cute and cozy, complete with a wood-burning stove and full bathroom inside.

It was nice to relax and unwind after a long day exploring. We turned on some tunes and enjoyed a glass of wine on the front deck. We waited until sunset to head to dinner, Kennedy in tow. It was a super dog friendly place, lots of pups around! The skies turned shades of pinks and purples above us as we ate. S’mores came out as it got dark which was a fun way to top off our evening around the campfire, meeting others and chatting about where everyone was headed on their road trips.

I think the bed was our (everyone’s) favorite part. It was one you didn’t want to ever get out of. Kyle got up and caught the sunrise (Leigh was glued to the bed, along with Ken) and captured some awesome photos. Afterwards we laid there until we had to check out, listening to the sounds of light rain hitting the roof of our tent and taking in the smells of the wood-fire still burning.

Next, we head to Lake Havasu and our last stop in the U.S. before Mexico!
